Government

Russell Kennedy’s Government team is one of the largest in Victoria. Our extensive experience and deep understanding of government allows us to act as a trusted partner to local, state and Australian Government clients.

We have represented government and statutory bodies since our firm’s inception.

  • As a leader in the local government sector, in the last five years alone Russell Kennedy has worked with all 79 of Victoria's local councils.
  • We have been a member of the Victorian Government Legal Services Panel since it was established in the early 2000s and routinely work with many Victorian Government departments and organisations.
  • We also regularly provide advice to Australian Government departments and organisations, including as a member of the Australian Government's whole-of-government legal services panel.

Russell Kennedy adds value. We understand our clients’ unique needs and the obligations of government decision making. We respect our clients' public facing roles and the requirements of internal stakeholders.

In short, we have a practical, deep understanding of the complex, multi-stakeholder context in which various levels of government and agencies across different portfolios operate. That's because we act for major government entities, as well as for many of the smaller agencies and authorities – providing the same level of excellent service for matters large and small. But just as importantly, we have flexibility enough to bring together the various legal disciplines necessary to deal with major or complex government projects: all sourced efficiently and cost-effectively from within Russell Kennedy.

Local Government

Our local government practice is large, well-resourced and covers the full spectrum of services: environment, building and construction, local laws and enforcement, prosecutions, planning, governance, commercial, property, workplace relations and employment.

We are:

  • committed to providing exceptional legal services and solutions to our local government clients on matters large or small, guided by market-leading expertise
  • experienced in delivering projects of substantial complexity for local government, often under significant time constraints
  • proud of our long-term professional relationships with our local government clients.

We deliver agile, practical and expert solutions to the complex and often unique problems of councils, with personal, prompt and efficient service.

A number of our lawyers have been recognised as particular leaders in the government sector and in their chosen areas of specialisation. See details of the team's recognition.

As well as obvious local government work, like planning and governance, we also offer expertise in areas like FOI, information technology and dispute resolution with personnel who have substantial local government experience.
