Katie acts primarily in the fields of compulsory acquisition and planning law.

Katie advises statutory authorities, Government bodies and private clients in relation to compulsory acquisition and related property matters. This includes advising on all aspects of claims made under the Land Acquisition and Compensation Act 1986 (LAC Act), Planning and Environment Act 1989 (PE Act) and the Major Transport Projects Facilitation Act 2009 (MTPFA) and conducting litigation for acquiring authorities involved in disputed compulsory acquisition claims/compensation claims in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Katie’s legal experience is complemented by her extensive public sector experience having worked for State Government departments on a number of major infrastructure projects.

Experience

  • Acted for the Department of Transport since 2018 in respect to claims for compensation pursuant to the LAC Act and/or PE Act, including Supreme Court litigation, on projects such as:
    • Outer Metropolitan ring/E6 Transport corridor
    • Dingley Bypass
    • Upgrade of Midland Highway and Doyles Road Roundabout, Shepparton
    • Grade Separation of Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road
    • Yan Yean Road Duplication
  • Providing advice relating to land acquisition and compensation and temporary land occupation matters associated with the West Gate Tunnel Project.
  • Advising and acting in respect of the compulsory acquisition of land for the New Footscray Hospital, including providing ongoing project management and strategic advice.
  • Advising and acting in respect of the compulsory acquisition of land for the Armstrong Creek West P-6 School, including advising regarding Governor-in-Council exemptions.
  • Advising and acting in respect of the compulsory acquisition of land, including VCAT litigation.
  • Advising and acting in respect of the compulsory acquisition of land (including acquisitions by agreements).
  • Acting for private clients in respect of their claims for compensation as a result of acquisitions by authorities, including the Western Outer Ring Main Pipeline Project and Crib Point Pakenham Pipeline Project.
